Active vs Passive Treatment

Passive treatment generally involves making things easier for you. This is great in the short term, however if it is not paired with active treatment such as a strength program it can reduce your capacity in the long term.

Active treatment involves increasing your ability to be able to do things such as walking, interacting with friends and increasing your independence. It is important to work on your strength and function to make sure.

Whether it be addressing pain, allowing you to get back to the things you would like to do or working towards being independent- exercise is a very important tool.

What we can control

When it comes to being able to do more things, looking at what we can control is important- it helps us to come up with the most effective treatment going forward together.

  • Listening to you and together coming up with a plan

Being part of the planning is important to ensure that together we come up with a plan that you are happy with, full of effective exercises that you enjoy and built up at a sustainable rate.

  • Getting you stronger

Getting you stronger is the key to being able to do more- whether it is walking further, actively participating at school with your friends or increasing your capacity around the house.

  • Your Muscles

When it comes to your body, your muscles are the thing that we can control the most. As your muscles get stronger, you feel better,  you can walk further and the stairs become easier.

How we assess

During your first session we talk about what you would like to achieve out of seeing an Exercise Physiologist, your goals, medical history, medication and exercise levels.

You may also have to complete some tests to determine our starting point and help to create our plan. Similar to muscular injuries we look at:

  • Ability to complete Activities of Daily Living(Walking, Sit to stands, stairs, etc)
  • The affected joints
  • The joints above and below
  • Quality of movement
  • How much pain you are in/10
  • Where the pain comes on

From here we present the ideal plan. Together we discuss what is practical, fits your plan and what you are happy with.

Here at Milestone we can help with:

  • Self Managed participants
  • Plan Managed participants
